Abimael Torres Avendano Arrested – A serious crash involving a horse-drawn buggy and a passenger vehicle in Burr Oak Township has left three people hospitalized with severe injuries and resulted in the arrest of a driver, according to authorities. The incident, which occurred Friday evening, has shocked residents and prompted an ongoing investigation by the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after 8:16 p.m. on Maystead Road near Needham Road following reports of a collision involving a horse-drawn buggy. What first appeared to be a traffic accident quickly developed into a major emergency response due to the severity of the injuries sustained by those involved.

According to preliminary findings released by investigators, a vehicle traveling eastbound on Maystead Road struck the rear of a horse-drawn buggy that was also traveling eastbound. The force of the impact was significant, causing all four occupants of the buggy to be thrown from the vehicle.

Deputies said the violent collision resulted in serious injuries to several occupants. Three individuals were airlifted from the scene to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment due to the severity of their conditions.

Among those injured were two children, who authorities reported are currently in stable condition. A pregnant woman who was also riding in the buggy suffered critical injuries and remains in serious condition. Officials have not released the identities of the victims involved in the crash.

The incident has deeply concerned members of the local community, where horse-drawn buggies are a familiar sight on rural roadways. Residents understand the unique challenges of sharing roads between motor vehicles and slower-moving horse-drawn transportation, making accidents of this nature particularly troubling.

First responders, including deputies, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and air medical crews, worked quickly to assist the injured victims. The scene remained active for an extended period as emergency crews provided medical care, secured the area, and began documenting evidence related to the collision.

Investigators with the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office have indicated that impairment may have played a role in the crash. According to authorities, preliminary evidence suggests drug use could have been a contributing factor in the collision. However, officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as they continue gathering and analyzing evidence.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash was identified as 54-year-old Abimael Torres Avendano. Deputies arrested him at the scene following the collision and transported him to the St. Joseph County Jail. Authorities have not yet released additional information regarding potential charges as the investigation continues.

The arrest marks a significant development in the case, but investigators are expected to conduct a thorough review before determining the full circumstances surrounding the crash. This process may include toxicology testing, witness interviews, accident reconstruction, and examination of physical evidence collected at the scene.

The severe injuries suffered by those riding in the buggy have generated widespread concern throughout the area. Community members have expressed support for the injured victims and their families as they face a difficult and uncertain recovery process.

Incidents involving horse-drawn buggies often result in serious injuries due to the limited protection available to occupants. Unlike passengers in motor vehicles, buggy riders are generally exposed and vulnerable to severe trauma when collisions occur, especially in rear-end crashes involving larger, faster-moving vehicles.

Safety advocates frequently remind motorists to remain vigilant when traveling on rural roads where horse-drawn transportation is common. Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and remain attentive to slower-moving traffic to help prevent similar tragedies.

For family members of the victims, the crash has been a devastating ordeal. The injuries sustained by the pregnant woman and the children involved underscore the seriousness of the incident and the long road to recovery that may lie ahead.

As loved ones gather around those receiving medical care, many are hoping for positive updates regarding their conditions. Community members have also begun offering prayers, support, and encouragement to the families affected by the crash.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials continue their investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision. Authorities are expected to release additional information as evidence is reviewed and the case progresses through the legal process.

The crash serves as a sobering reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of impaired driving and the importance of exercising caution on roadways shared by a variety of vehicles and forms of transportation.

For now, the focus remains on the recovery of the injured victims and the ongoing efforts to determine exactly what led to the collision. The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the investigation remains active, and further updates may be provided as new information becomes available.

As the Burr Oak Township community reflects on the events of that evening, many continue to hope for healing for the injured and answers for the families affected by this tragic crash.
